What happens during a water softener installation

How long does installation take?

Most water softener installations take a few hours in a typical Metro Detroit home, start to finish, and are done in a single visit. The work happens at your main water line, usually in a basement, garage or utility space, and we walk you through the system before leaving.

Step by step

  1. We assess your water. We pull the published data for your supply and talk through what you have noticed at home: scale, taste, smell, appliances. No one needs to visit for this.
  2. We size the system. Hardness and household size decide the capacity. Sizing it correctly is what keeps running costs sensible and stops the system exhausting early.
  3. Install day. An experienced Michigan installer fits the system on your main line, usually in the basement, garage or a utility space. Most installs take a few hours.
  4. Startup and programming. We start the system, program the valve for your water and household, and check for leaks under pressure.
  5. Walkthrough before we leave. We show you how it works, what to add and when, and what to expect over the first few days as the soft water works through the house.

What we need from you on the day

  • Access to the main water line and the space around it.
  • A power outlet and a drain nearby for a salt-based system.
  • Somewhere to put the brine tank within reach for topping up.
  • About a few hours, and someone at home to let us in and take the walkthrough.
Not sure your space works? Tell us what you have on the call. We have fitted these into crawl spaces, utility closets and under stairs. See real installs.

Common questions

How long does a water softener installation take?

Most installs take a few hours and are completed in a single visit. Unusual plumbing or a tight space can add time, and we will say so before the day rather than on it.

Do I need to be home?

Yes, someone needs to let us in and take the short walkthrough at the end, so you know how the system works before we leave.

Will my water be off?

Briefly, while we cut into the main line and fit the bypass. It is a matter of hours, not days.

Where does the system go?

Wherever the main line is practical to work on: usually a basement, garage or utility space, close to a drain and a power outlet.
